Picasso's Guernica Painting

Guernica painting
The story of the Guernica painting dates back to the Spanish Civil War. The work takes its name from the town of Guernica, which was destroyed in the war.In 1937, with the support of German and Italian forces, Francisco Franco tested the new warplanes in the Spanish town of Guernica. Most of the city was destroyed after planes bombed the city.

Coming to the review of the work:
Guernica painting made using black and white colors. One of the most important reasons why he prefers black and white colors is that they represent pain and also want to tell the contrast of death and life. The fact that he got the news from the newspapers may also be a reason for this.Picasso has left some interpretation of this painting to us.

In the Guernica painting, the chaos of the war and the suffering of the people in general stand out clearly. It is as if the human figures in pain and the cries of the people in the city who are being bombarded are reaching us from the painting. On the left side of the painting, the woman with a baby in her arms may represent the dead babies, perhaps also expressing hopelessness about the future. The figure of the broken sword in the man's hand at the bottom of the painting, on the other hand, may be telling, in my own interpretation, that brave people died in vain as a result of the attack in unfair conditions.

Picasso said of the painting, “It is not the painter's job to define the symbols. Viewers should interpret the symbols as they understand them. " says. As a result, Guernica makes sense as the viewer interprets it. The continuation of brutal wars combined with the uncertainty brought about by the symbolism in the painting makes Guernica a timeless and universal work. The work, which is accepted as the international symbol of peace, is exhibited in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid today.
