MEVLANA AND TOLERANCE

Updated: Jul 26, 2023

Mevlana, also known as Jalal ad-Din Rumi, was a prominent 13th-century Islamic philosopher, poet, and mystic. He is widely recognized as the founder of the Mevlevi tradition, also known as Whirling Dervishes. His most famous work, the "Mathnawi," is a profound collection of poetry that delves into the themes of love, mysticism, and the union of the soul with the divine.

Mevlana's philosophy revolves around love, tolerance, unity, and universal human values. He emphasizes the importance of love and understanding in transcending divisions and differences among people. Mevlana's teachings carry a universal message, inspiring the belief that peace, love, and tolerance can coexist among all individuals.

Each year, on the anniversary of Mevlana's death, which is celebrated as the "Wedding Night" (Şeb-i Arus), Sufi dervishes perform sema rituals to commemorate his spiritual union. Mevlana's influence has resonated across centuries, touching the lives of many in the Islamic world and beyond, with his teachings still cherished and followed with great admiration today.
